Biography

Raid on Celtic Wood 

One of the 19 unwounded men on the raid was 3382 Private Daniel John Rhodes a glazier from Yacka, South Australia was in the field with 12 Platoon C Company.

Daniel  had enlisted at 18 years of age and joined the 10th Battalion in Egypt in September 1916. 

Recommendation for Military Medal.

‘In the demonstration against the enemy position in CELTIC WOOD, east of YPRES on the morning of 9th October Pte. RHODES set a splendid example of courage and devotion to duty. When the demonstration was completed he bandaged and carried back two of his comrades under heavy enemy machine-gun and snipers.’[i]

Returned to Australia in April 1919 and died of Tuberculosis in 1921; he was 24 years of age.
