Maurice served in 13 Platoon, C Company. His Company Commander was Captsin Dave Walker, Platoon Commander Bert Findlay and Section Leader "Stumpy" Boulton.
Maurie was nicknamed "Hank". He was tall, thin, a 'good bloke', quiet, clean cut, spoke quietly, handsome.
One Ted Rose recalls clearly when Maurie rejoined the Unit after having leave at home. He was delighted that his wife was pregnant.
Maurie's section had been on patrol. It is thought the Japanese followed the patrol back, noted their position and fired a mortar that landed right in the middle of four men. Maurie died instantly, the other three died on Toll Plantation. More men were wounded.
Maurie formerly served in E Company - machine gunners in open warfare - before that company was disbanded.
(These memories provided to family in 1993 by members of the 14/32 Australian Infantry Battalion Association.)
