Flying Officer Charles Henry Bell 118432 & Leading Aircraftman Eric Harvey McCarthy 80427 were killed when Spitfire BS300 veered off the runway during take-off from Livingstone Field, Darwin, NT and collided with their vehicle. Both men were from Number 1 Radio Installation & Maintenance Unit (1RIMU), 44 Radar Wing. The pilot, FLGOFF Gould 404062 of Number 457 Squadron, was uninjured.
