John James Weaver was one of three sons of Thomas George and Eliza Weaver, of Gum Vale, Hillston, New South Wales, who enlisted in the AIF. He was the only one to return having served with the 1st Light Horse for over three years.
The family was beset by tragedy during WW1, their youngest boy, aged 15, drowning in a tank on their property on New Years Day 1915. They then lost two sons died of wounds during 1917.
John’s older brother, 201 Pte. Thomas George Weaver 36th Battalion AIF died of wounds on 17 March 1917, aged 31. He had enlisted with 202 Pte. James Edward Weaver, also of the 36th Battalion AIF who died of wounds five months after Thomas on 13 August 1917, aged 24.
