Son of Joseph Ernest and Alma Violet Berg, of Leederville, Western Australia.
Private Joseph Raymond Berg was a hardware shop assistant, aged 18 years 5 months, the son of Joseph Ernest Berg. Pvte Berg was already serving as W53518 in the 35 Aust Inf Training Btn but in August 1943 he was transferred to the AIF with service number WX40262. In November 1943 he was transferred to 116 Aust Lt AA Regt. In January 1944 he saw service in the 5th Military District but suffered various injuries and illnesses until in February 1945 he was transferred to the 1 Aust Base Depot Personnel. On 23 March 1945 he embarked aboard the S.S. Duntroon for service in Morotai, arriving there on 13 April 1945.
On 17 April 1945 Pvte Berg suffered from a skin complaint, later diagnosed as ‘scabies’. He spent time in hospital in April, July and November and on 19 December 1945 was medically evacuated from Morotai to the mainland aboard RAAF aircraft CIZ which was then listed as missing between Ambon and Darwin. For official purposes his date of death was given as 19 December 1945
