Walrus flying boat X9559 of 8 Communications Unit based on Goodenough Island was hit by ground fire 25 October 1944 after landing at a bay on Keresau Island, New Guinea on a reconnaissance mission
Pilot Officer Walter Burford Bernie 428901 RAAF (Pilot) and Captain Morris Glen Evensen NGX189 Australian Army (71 Wing Air Liaison Officer) were killed by Japanese forces after going ashore - their bodies were not recovered and they are commemorated on the Lae Memorial
Warrant Officer Joseph Merrick Towers Brown 418063 (Air Gunner) became a Prisoner of War but died of wounds on the 1st of November 1944 at Boiken after being taken from the island to the New Guinea mainland - his body was recovered and he is buried in the Lae War Cemetery
