Katoomba RAAF Boy Meets Death in Canada
News came to hand on Monday that Flying-Officer Claude Blick, one of Katoomba's most esteemed young men, had died in Canada. As a token of respect the flag at the School was flown half-mast. Flying Officer-Blick was educated at Katoomba Intermediate High School and the Sydney Teachers'
Col lege. Whilst at school he showed outstanding ability at study and sport. He was captain and Dux of the School in his last year at Katoomba. A good cricketer and tennis player whilst quite a lad, he played with the School of Arts Cricket Club, showing marked batting ability. However, it was at athletics that' he was best remembered at school. He was a fair sprinter. but an excellent middle distance runner, his favourite distance, being the 440. At the Teachers' College he still followed athletics and represented the College in the, fixtures against Melbourne, gaining further successes there. Shortly before leaving for Canada a field day was held for the RA.A.F. Cadre and Claude surprised his. camp mates by carrying off the 220 yards and 440 yards with electrifying
finishes. After leaving College he was appointed to Daceyville School, and later to a school in the Riverina district: About two and half years ago he was brought back to the city and was stationed at Dee Why when he enlisted in the R.AA.F. He did particularly well at the various camps in N.S.W. and was sent to Canada to complete his training'. Some time this year he was posted to a squadron in England. Flying Officer Blick's father, Mr Phil Blick, died at Katoomba two years ago. A brother is employed by Messrs Booth Bros, and His mother is now a resident of Manly. A close friend of the deceased, Pilot Officer Riding, who until recently had been training at the same centre in Canada, was able to give the family many personal details. Flying Officer Blick was killed as the result of an aircraft accident.
