Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Stoker Leslie Joseph Blight (Service No:F3546) enlisted in the RAN as an Able Seaman on 26 May 1941 and served on HMAS Leeuwin, Cerberus and Napier before his posting to HMAS Nestor. Stoker Blight was one of four crew KiA on 15 June 1942 when HMAS Nestor - part of a covering force for a large convoy - was bombed about 100 miles north of Tobruk. The boiler room flooded and, following rescue of surviving crew, the ship was scuttled when attempts to take her under tow were unsuccesful.

Born in Pingelly WA in 1922, Les was the eldest of two children of Leslie (Les Snr) James Blight (b1901 in Geraldton, WA) and Lucy Goodridge (b1902 in Surrey, England) - Lucy had immigrated with her parents and siblings in 1914, arriving in Fremantle WA on board the Australind. Les Snr (a Farm Hand and Contractor) and Lucy married in 1922 in Beverley, WA and lived in Northam where Les Snr was a Labourer. Les left his wife and two children - Lucy worked as a Washerwoman and House Cleaner to support her children - and returned to Toodyay. Les and Lucy divorced in 1928 and Les remarried, settling in Beacon via Toodyay where he worked as a Shop Assistant, Farmer, Wheat Lumper, Storekeeper and Postmaster. Lucy settled in Perth where she raised her two children and worked as a Dressmaker, remarrying in 1936.

Les was a Student in Perth in 1941 when he enlisted in the RAN.
