Flight Lieutenant Walter Michael Blom graduated as a pilot from Point Cook in 1937 and was transferred from the RAAF to the RAF on a short-term commission (RAF Service Number 40041)
Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions with 150 Squadron RAF in May / June 1940
FLTLT Blom and his two crewmen in Fairey Battle L5528 were killed at the RAF base in Newton, Nottinghamshire, England when a bomb fell off as the aircraft was being "bombed-up" - it began to burn and eventually exploded.
The AWM have him on the Roll of Honour as being a member of the Royal Australian Air Force and an entry for his DFC as a member of the Royal Air Force - plus they hold a RAF biographical file for him.
The other crew lost were:
Sergeant William Henry James Franklin RAF 522061 (recipient of a BEM - British Empire Medal) - son of Commander Cyril Prescott Franklin, DSO, RN and Florence Marjorie Franklin of Radlett, Hertfordshire. His brother John Michael also died on service.
Aircraftman 1st Class Frederick Stewart RAF 638353 - son of Robert and Rebecca Stewart of Cookstown, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland
