Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Son of Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Bowell, of Lindfield, New South Wales, Australia.

On the outward journey to the target which was the Ems-Weser Canal, the Lancaster aircraft was shot down by a German night fighter and crashed in the grounds of Walingen farm at Havixbeck which is ten miles north-west of Munster.  The aircraft was still carrying its full bomb load and exploded on impact.  All members of the crew lost their lives and from these facts it would seem certain that they were killed instantaneously.  All members of the crew were buried at Hohenholte which is eight miles north-west of Munster in comrades grave No. 2.
