"Thomas William Bracher was the brother of my dear darling wife, formally Patricia Mary Bracher. Tom was keen to follow his father into the Royal Australian Navy, his dad joined at the last months of ww1, then served in the Fleet Reserve between the two wars, was called up at the very beginning of ww11 and began in HMAS Australia immediately which sailed at short notice for convoy and patrol work in the Atlantic. Thomas was drafted to HMAS Matafele a small stores vessel with a crew of 37. The vessel was carrying supplies from Townsville to Milne Bay New Guinea and simply just disappeared around the 24 of June 1944, Tom turned 18 years in May 1944.

"...W2983 Stoker 2nd Class Thomas William Bracher RAN, HMAS Matafele. Stoker Bracher enlisted on 12 October 1943. He was on board the supply ship HMAS Matafele when it disappeared with all hands whilst on a routine voyage between Townsville and Milne Bay sometime after the 20 June 1944. Listed on the Roll of Honour as having died on 24 June 1944, Sto Bracher was aged 18 at the time of his death and has no known grave." - SOURCE (www.awm.gov.au) (www.awm.gov.au)
