Lieutenant Commander Francis Kevin Fogarty RAN and Petty Officer Telegraphist Colin Kenneth Bunnett 17469 RAN were killed when Walrus II L2247 of 9SQN RAAF was shot down into the sea off the coast from Dakar in French West Africa after being attacked by 3 Vichy French Curtiss Hawk 75A fighter aircraft

The aircraft took off from HMAS Australia with Flight Lieutenant George John Isaiah Clarke 119 RAAF as the pilot to undertake bombardment spotting during Operation Menace (aka The Battle of Dakar - an unsuccessful attempt to capture the strategic port of Dakar in French West Africa in September 1940)

Their bodies were not recovered and the two RAN personnel are commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial in England & FLTLT Clarke is commemorated on the Malta Memorial
