Son of Edwain James Butler and Ruby Lottie (nee Purnell) Butler of Southwark, South Australia; brother of Douglas Edwin Butler, Shirley Dawn Butler and Dorothy Jean Butler. Douglas served in the 2/27 Battalion and Dorothy served in the  VAD 105 AMH
