Biography contributed by Mari Walker

Son of Herbert Arthur and Gladys Irene Butler, of Launceston Tasmania, Australia.

A BRAVE YOUNG LIFE NOBLY GIVEN. LOVED AND REMEMBERED ALWAYS

Kenneth Herbert Butler was born in 1921 to Herbert Arthur and Gladys Irene Butler, of Launceston Tasmania. He was educated at St Marys State School from the age of 12 to 15 years.
Sgt Butler enlisted in September 1940 and prior to this, had been working in the Cornwall coal mine in Tasmania. He embarked for the UK in May 1941, arriving there in August 1941. In November 1941 the Wellington aircraft in which he was air gunner, stalled and crashed near Kneesworth, Cambridgeshire, in bad visibility when preparing to land at Bassingbourn after a night exercise. Sgt Butler was badly injured and died of his injuries on 15 November 1941.
Sadly Sgt Butler’s older brother, Vern, who served with the AIF, was a prisoner of war, dying in Burma on 11 November 1943.
