Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Served and suffered during The Great War, now resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

87 years ago today, on the Thursday afternoon of the 14th February 1935, Private Francis James Fraser, 34th Battalion (Reg No-2307), mill hand from Buladelah, New South Wales and William Street, Jesmond, N.S.W., father of two (Vivian and Eric), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 41. METHODIST 4-09. 6.

Born at Forster, New South Wales on the 16th August 1893 to Andrew and Elizabeth (Eliza) Fraser; husband of Alice Elizabeth Fraser nee Henderson (married 1923, Petersham, N.S.W., died?), Francis enlisted May 1916 at West Maitland, N.S.W.

Wounded in action - 7.6.1917 (GSW right arm, fractured, Battle of Messines).

Francis returned home November 1917, being discharged medically unfit on the 13th May 1918.
Mr. Fraser’s name has been inscribed on the Bulahdelah District First World War Roll of Honour (photo), Buladelah Citizens Memorial and the Bulahdelah War Memorial Hall Honour Roll. A member of the Lambton Lodge Independent Order of Oddfellows who produced a Roll of Honour.

There is no indication inscribed on Francis’s headstone plaque of his service with the 1stA.I.F., so I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label in remembrance of his sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Contact with descendants would be greatly appreciated.

Lest We Forget.
