John was assigned to HMAS Matafele a store carrier which was commissioned on the 1 January 1943 and was lost without trace and all 37 hands on the 20 June 1944 while on route to Milne Bay. The crew included Torres Strait Islanders and Aboriginals
At the time of disappearance the Matafele was carrying 215 tons of Naval stores. The Matafele also performed surveying and navigational duties along the Papua New Guinea cost
