During WW1, Arthur Pugh fought in Belgium and in France. In Belgium he received a bullet wound to his back in October 1917. In France he suffered shrapnel wounds to his abdomen, right arm and left eye in April 1918.
While recovering in England he met and later married [in December 1918] Edith Winifred Smith. Their first child, and only son, John, was born in Sussex. Arthur returned to Australia and was discharged in mid-May 1920.
