Biography contributed by David Barlow

Flight Lieutenant Norman Henry Dick 277483 was formerly the A.D.C. to His Excellency the Governor of Queensland, Australia

He accidentally drowned near Mount Lavinia in Ceylon while attached to RAF HQ / RAAF Overseas Headquarters - during WW2 the Mount Lavinia hotel was used as a military hospital by the British Army.

"For a swim in the sea we could go five miles down the coast to Mount Lavinia, one of the many long stretches of unspoilt, sandy, palm fringed beaches. The sea was warm enough to bathe in all year round."

Biography contributed by Anthony Vine

FLIGHT LIEUTENANT NORMAN HENY DICK ADC RAAF

Norman Dick was born in Hornsey Yorkshire England,  where according to a family tree he was born in 1903. This is at variance to his Army Militia Service Certificate which states 1902, and a place of birth as London. It would appear that Norman “adjusted” his date of birth when applying to join the RAAF, stating he was born in 1906. Norman was the son of Henry and Lilian Dick of Yorkshire and he had one older sibling, Grace born in 1897, Henry passed away in 1936.

At some stage in the 1920s Henry moved to Australia, in 1930 he was living in Darlinghurst NSW, employed as an Insurance Clerk, in 1936 in Woollahra as a “Manufacturer”, and on enlistment in the RAAF he stated he was a City Inspector for an Insurance Company.  Norman enlisted in the Australian Army Militia in January 1938 as a private and was commissioned as a Lieutenant in July 1940.  He served as an ADC to the Queensland Governor in 1940-41 and at some stage was promoted to Acting Captain.

Norman’s RAAF Service Certificate in the NAA contains no information about his postings, so it is probable that the original was lost and the one on his file has raised after his death.

Flight Lieutenant Norman Dick RAAF drowned whilst swimming at Mount Lavina in Ceylon on the 2 of October 1943. He is buried in the Liveramenthu Cemetery in Colombo Sri Lanka.
