One of six siblings who served in WWII, Private/Signalman Thomas Victor Dwyer (Service No:VX33935) enlisted in the AIF on 1 July 1940 - graded Operator - and was a Signalman attached to 8 Division Signals on 29 January 1941 when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney for Singapore. Captured by the Japanese on 15 February 1942, Signalman Dwyer was a PoW in Changi Prison when he was attached to 'A'Force, embarking from Singapore for Thailand on 19 May 1942. Signalman Dwyer died from illness in Thailand on 9 June 1943. 

Thomas was born at Strath Creek, Murrindindi, Victoria in 1906, fourth of ten children of Thomas Dwyer Snr (b1874 at King Parrot Creek via Flowerdale, Victoria) and Flora Gillies McLean (b1883 at Riddells Creek, Macedon Ranges, Victoria). Thomas and Flora married in Melbourne in 1901, and lived at Yea, Strath Creek, Violet Town, Glenrowan and Wangaratta. Thomas Snr was a Farmer, Wheat Buyer, General Commission Agent and Saw Mill Owner. He served with the 10th Light Horse Regiment, was Captain of the Glenrowan Rifle Club and a member of the Glenrowan Cricket Club.

Thomas started work with the Railways (VGR) in Melbourne in the mid 1920s, and was Assistant Stationmaster at Charlton Railway Station in 1940 when he enlisted in the Army.
