Son of James Joseph FARRELL and Mary Teresa nee BRENNAN, of Proserpine, Queensland.
Cpl. Jack Thomas Farrell died in the 113 A.G.H., Concord, Sydney, on 29 October, 1945, aged 26 years and 10 months.
There is more than a touch of sadness in the passing of this young Proserpine native. He enlisted in Proserpine and went away with the 2/26 Bn. to Singapore in 1941. Captured when the Japanese over-ran Malaya he spent several years in various Japanese prison camps and worked on the construction of a railway in Thailand.
Soon after word had been received of his safety it was learnt that the years of captivity had undermined his health and he was placed on the Army dangerously ill list. He returned to Australia on the hospital ship "Manunda" on 27 October and was taken to Concord, where he died after only a few days in his home country.
Cpl. Farrell is a son of Mrs. T. Farrell, Proserpine. She had three sons in the A.I.F., two of whom— Jack and Joe, the latter being killed in action on his 20th birthday—have made the supreme sacrifice. Another son, James, is still in the A.I.F.
