Darlington Point
Airman Missing
L.A.C. D.M.Finley
Mrs. T. E. Finley of Benlock, Darlington Point, last week received the sad news that her eldest son L.A.C D. M. Finley, had been reported missing between Rockhampton and Townsville.
Writing to Mrs Finley, the Wing Commander of L.A.C. Finley's squadron, said:
'The aircraft, piloted by Squadron Leader Sharp, D.F.C was engaged in a travel flight and is now reported missing, due to bad weather. The aircraft was last seen at 4p.m. on 11th March, 1946, over Bowen, in the centre of the Queensland coast and since then, despite intensive searches, no trace has been found.
'This is a most unfortunate occurrence and I regret under the circumstances that I cannot form and give you an opinion as to what may have happened to the aircraft. 'Your son was an extremely popular member of this squadron and by his cheerfulness and enthusiasm, set a good example to the rest of the unit and the fact that he is missing is deeply felt by all who knew him.
On behalf of the squadron I extend to you our deepest sympathy in your bereavement, and should you require any assistance or any further information I will do everything I can to give it and furthermore, if any in formation should come to hand I will communicate to you immediately.
L.A.C. Finley, who was born at Narandera, will not be 21 until May. He has three sisters— Misses Lorna Finley (Cootamundra District Hospital), Mary Finley (Gosford post office), and Isabella Finley (Darlington Point). His brother is Laurie Finley (Darlington Point). His father, Tom ('Boxer') Finley, is serving in the army.
