101 years ago today, on the Tuesday afternoon of the 15th May 1923, Driver James Samuel Whatley, 14th Australian Field Company Engineers (Reg No-5026), engine driver (Hamilton Loco. Depot), from George Street, North Waratah, New South Wales and Myra Street, New Lambton, N.S.W. and 5 O'Mara Street, Mayfield East, N.S.W., was laid to rest with a military funeral at Sandgate Cemetery, age 53. ANGLICAN 1-81. 34.

James had died on the 12th May 1923 at the Prince of Wales Hospital, Randwick, N.S.W.

Born at Penrith, New South Wales on the 31st December 1869 to Samuel John, died 1874, Penrith, N.S.W., and Harriet (Margaret) Whatley, died 1884, Penrith, N.S.W.; husband of Ellen Jane Whatley nee Hardy (married 1893, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 11.11.1935, Newcastle Hospital, N.S.W., age 60, sleeping here) from O’Mara Street, Waratah, N.S.W., James enlisted on the 15th August 1915 with the 1st Australian Field Company Engineers, age 45, at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A35 Berrima on the 17th December 1915.

Admitted to hospital 4.8.1916 (bronchitis), 14.11.1916 & 18.12.1916 (debility & age).

Transferred to England 22.12.1916.

Commenced return to Australia 4.5.1917.

James arrived home invalided on the 4th July 1917, being discharged medically unfit (bronchitis, pains in back, overage) on the 3rd August 1917.

Mr. Whatley’s name has been inscribed on the Cooks Hill Superior Public School Roll of Honour, Cooks Hill St. John's Anglican Church Honor Roll, Hamilton Loco Employees Roll of Honour, Tighes Hill Methodist Church Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at the gravesite of James and son William in remembrance of their service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Eldest son William Ernest (born 8.10.1894, Newcastle, N.S.W., labourer from George Street, North Waratah, New South Wales and 5 O'Mara Street, Mayfield East, N.S.W., enlisted 21.8.1914, Divisional Train, No 1 Company, Reg No-286 & 287B, an Original Anzac, RTA 25th December 1918 (Special 1914 Leave), died 26.6.1971, Cessnock, N.S.W., age 76, not officially commemorated, resting same location.
