Son of David Ferguson Gordon and Mary Gordon.

He completed a law degree at tne University of Melbourne and in 1935 he went into partnetship with his brother-in-law William Slater creating the law firm Slater & Gordon.

He married Elspeth Campbell Gordon, of Ulonga, New South Wales, Australia.
