Son of Frederick William Goulden and Mary nee Davidson of 99 Wiley's Ave., Lakeemba, NSW
Married  Agnes Virginia Carlson 20 May 1941. Known as Virginia.

Cause of death was Japanese firing squad for an escape attempt.  Died without knowing his wife had given birth to his son.

Survived by his wife Virginia and son Howard, his parents Frederick Goulden and Mary Miller, brothers Frederick, Donald(AIF) and sister Mary Kilburn.

2017  posthumously awarded the Commendation for Gallantry.

Private Robert Goulden was awarded the Commendation for Gallantry for actions following capture by the Imperial Japanese Army on 15 February 1942 until his execution as a result of an escape attempt on 12 July 1942. Following his escape, Private Goulden was located 25kms from the POW camp within a coconut grove. He was subjected to a summary trial and sentenced to death which was carried out immediately. - Defence Honours and Awards
