The aircraft was Defiant MK1 N3328 which crashed in Yorkshire. The Defiant had been awaiting collection from another airbase and FLTSGT Goulter had been flown there to bring the plane back to home base.
Eye witnesses stated that the plane was upside down with the engine still running. Half the propellor had broken off and other wreckage was scattered across a large area.
Investigators suggested a variety of causes and that the crash was attributed to mostly pilot error and failure to follow instructions and/or the instruments were defective. The weather conditions at the time were shocking with low cloud and a very heavy hailstorm in progress.
At the time of the crash John had flown a total of 650 hours including 181 in the Defiant aircraft
