James was in the Officers Mess when it was hit by and enemy bomb during air raid on Rabat, Malta

Prior to enlistment he was employed by Broken Hill Pty Ltd, Newcastle, NSW

23 July 1941 - earned his Flying Badge and flew Spitfires and took part in the attacks on Brest
