Youngest of two brothers (Walter) who served in WWII, Private Reginald James Hais (Service No:QX23502) enlisted in the AIF on 22 August 1941 with 7 Training Battalion, and was attached to 49th Infantry Battalion (aka the Stanley Regiment) on 21 March 1942 when he embarked with his Unit from Townsville for Port Moresby on board SS Tarooma. Reported 'Missing believed wounded' (NAA) on 7 December 1942 in the Battle of Sanananda, Private Hais was 'for official purposes presumed dead' (NAA) on 22 January 1946.

Born in Brisbane QLD in 1921, Reg was second of three children of Walter James Hais (b1886 in Brisbane, QLD) and his first wife Annie Louisa Rendle (b1889 in Brisbane, QLD). Walter (a Mechanic) and Annie (a Housekeeper) married in 1912 in Brisbane, where they settled and raised their family and Walter was a Mechanic. Following Annie's death in 1940, Walter remarried and settled in Birkdale via Cleveland.

Reg was a Farm Hand in Birkdale via Cleveland in 1941 when he enlisted in the Army.
