SYDNEY PILOT'S DEATH
Flying-Officer Allan Henry Haley, first pilot to graduate in New South Wales under the Empire Air Training Scheme, and one of the first in the British Empire, was officially posted by Air Board at the week-end as "presumed killed." He was last seen being attacked by anti-aircraft fire while strafing Japanese shipping in the Irrawaddy River, near Mandalay, on New Year's Day, 1943
The only son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Haley, of Beach Street, Coogee, Flying-Officer Haley had a distinguished record as a fighter pilot, having been in combat against German, Italian, and Japanese pilots.
After he had been reported missing in the raid on Japanese ships, his commanding officer informed Mr. and Mrs. Haley that he had been awarded the D.F.C., but that the presentation had been delayed.
In recognition of his services in Malta, Flying-Officer Haley was awarded the Maltese Cross.
