Ian served with the Australian Army during WW2 and has postings in PNG and on the Soloman Islands. He was "taken on strength" in March 1942, had various postings within Australia, and undertook jungle warfare training in late 1943. His first overseas posting started in February 1944 when he disembarked in Lai.
In late 1945 he had a further posting to Rabaul, New Britain. In February 1946 he contracted gastroenteritis, was hospitalised, and in mid-March 1946 he disembarked in Sydney, and was discharged from the Army soon afterwards.
