HARTLEY.—In proud & loving memory of QX14895, Corporal A.C.L. Hartley (Mick) died In Japan P.O.W., 22nd May, 1943.
DEATH IN P.O.W. CAMP
Mr and Mrs D. J. L. Hartley, of Torquay, Maryborough, have received private advice of the death of their youngest son, Cpl Arnold Clifford Lester (Mick) Hartley (AIF) in a Japanese prisoner of war camp.
Cpl Hartley died after a short illness on May 22, 1943, and the first intimation of his death was by letter from his mate, H. G. Buchanan (Osako I. POW Camp). The letter was written in December, 1943, and was just recently received, so that their son was dead 20 months before the parents knew of it. The sad news came as a great shock to them, more particularly as a supposed radio message from him was heard by them on January 3, 1944. This obviously was a fake, as Cpl Hartley was then dead eight months.
The parents had received a few cards from their son, the last, in July, 1943, coming to hand after his death.
