Sergeant Philip Carlisle Hay 408105 RAAF and Flight Sergeant George Ewen R/65737 RCAF of 36SQN RAF were killed when Vickers Vildebeest K4108 was shot down near Endau, Malaya - their bodies were not recovered and they are commemorated on the Singapore Memorial

Squadron Leader Willmott 37927 RAF survived the loss and was able to evade capture

(First flown in 1928 the RAF Vickers Vildebeest was a large single-engined biplane used as a light bomber - the last few examples in service were flown against invading Japanese forces in Singapore and Java in early 1942)
