KILLED AT BALIKPAPAN
Pte Ian Harold Hayes, 21, youngest son of Mr and Mrs H. S. Hayes, of Lockwood South (formerly of Toolleen), was killed in action at Balikpapan, Borneo, on July l8. Pte Hayes attended Toolleen state school, and later went to Melbourne Boys' High School. He won a free place at Melbourne University and a non - resident scholarship to Ormond College. Becoming a resident of Queen's College he took his degree of Bachelor of Commerce with honours in 1942. He was the first student to gain his degree at the age of 19. Before enlistment he was employed In the Commonwealth Statist's office at Canberra. Pte Hayes' father was an Anzac of the 1914-18 war.
