The Uncle I Never Knew
When I was a little girl in the late 1940s, when I was living with my mother and grandmother, there were many discussions about Frank and his service during the war. His body was not discovered for some time after the war and was only identified by his dog tags. My grandmother had always hoped that he would somehow return and the shock of confirmation of his death caused her to lose her sight for some time. My mother and her sister were very fond of their little brother and this was reflected in the letters which he wrote to home when he was stationed in England - they were always upbeat, playing down the stress which he must have been experiencing. In one letter, with perfect copperplate writing, he asked my mother to let the girls who worked with her know that he would welcome some letters from them. I was the first family member to visit my Uncle Frank in Hannover War Cemetery in 1972 and we had planned to visit again in 2020 but that has been postponed. Each Anzac Day, my thoughts are with him.
