When the ferry reached the opposite bank, the truck failed to negotiate the drive off and rolled back. The sudden concentration of weight at the rear of the ferry tipped it down, the ferry quickly filled with water and sunk. Men fell into the deep river; those who where fully dressed and in full kit were pulled under the water. Eight men drowned.
