OBITUARY
PRIVATE FRANK HOUSTON.
The sad news was received yesterday of the death in Charters Towers of Private Frank Houston, of the Garrison Corps. Deceased, who was 53 years of age, was born in the Pittsworth district, and when a youth worked on the property of Mr. E. L. Ramsay, prominent
horse-breeder. Later he engaged in farming on the Darling Downs and at that time raced a number of horses. Disposing of the farm he entered business at Brookstead (near Plttsworth). Later he came to Mackay and was in business in Wood-street as a tobacconist and hairdresser for about 10 years. He was a registered bookmaker with the NQRA, and was a
regular fielder at the Turf Club and Trotting Club's fixtures. Outstanding amongst the horses he raced was Rivalli, who won the Brisbane Cup. In Mackay he raced Rivampion which he purchased hi Sydney as a yearling. Rivampion showed splendid promise and after winning here was taken to Brisbane where he won races and also won at Ipswich. Rivampion is now
raced by Mr. W. Roden, and has won at Mackay, Rockhampton, and Townsville. The late Private Houston, who was stationed at a northern post, became ill about a fortnight ago and was taken
to Charters Towers hospital where he passed away yesterday. Popular with the sporting fraternity he will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his widow, who resides in George-street, two sons, Private Garfield Houston, and Darcy Houston, and one daughter (Miss Ardleigh Houston, who at present is on a visit to Mt. Isa). The body is to be brought
to Mackay for burial.
