Alex was the pilot of Blenheim Z7705 on a daylight bombing mission from RAF Baigachi. The aircraft was shot down in flames by Japanese "Oscar" fighters and fell into the sea about eight miles northwest of Akyab (now Sittwe) in Burma at 2:40pm. The crew of three were seen swimming in the water. Only the body of the navigator, John Hay, was recovered.
