Son of Alfred HUGHES and Dinah Mary nee WOODHOUSE, of Proserpine, Queensland, Australia.
HE GAVE HIS LIFE THAT WE MAY ENJOY PEACE, NOW AND FOR EVER.
“At 5 a.m. July 22 we were into it – a bayonet attack on a ridge about 2,000 yards off through air thick with lead. The objective gained, but "Mulga" and his badly depleted party were ordered to clear a gap in the minefield to let our truck clear the wounded. Two of his mates were badly shocked and temporary hopeless as a useful force, so he aided them to the comparative safety of a nearby shell hole, placing more work on his shoulders. With these men safe "Mulga" turned to his job in the face of heavy mortar fire. They got him.” SGT A. CAMPBELL
