Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

65 years ago today, on the 8th February 1960, Private John Alexander Anderson, 17th Battalion (Reg No-4354), farmer or labourer from William Street, Canterbury, New South Wales and Newcastle?, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 62 or 64. GENERAL-34. 66.

Born at Canterbury, New South Wales about 1896 or 1898 to John and Gertrude C Anderson (Susan Mary-Stepmother?), from Phillip Street, Belmore, New South Wales; husband of Madeline Vera Anderson nee Holden, married 1921, Wingham, N.S.W., died 7.8.1995, age 95, 35 years a widow, sleeping here, John enlisted on the 3rd January 1916 at Sydney, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A71 Nestor on the 9th April 1916.

Admitted to hospital 2.3.1917 (trench feet), 2.4.1918 (septic right hand).

Wounded in action - 3.10.1918 (gassed).

Invalided to England 7.10.1918.

Admitted to hospital 8.10.1918.

Commenced return to Australia 18.12.1918.

John arrived home invalided on the 5th February 1919, being discharged medically unfit on the 22nd March 1919.

Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment, returning home etc.

Mr. Anderson’s name has been inscribed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name possibly inscribed on the Merrylands Remembrance Park Memorial.

I have placed poppies at John’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
