JEFFREYS
Perth, March 19.— A member of a well-known rowing family, and an oarsman who himself won 44 races in pairs, fours or, eights. Flight-Sergeant Gordon Roger Jeffreys joined the R.A.A.F. in November, 1940, and after being transferred to the R.A.F. he went to India. Action in Burma followed, and now advice has been received that Flight-Sergeant Jeffreys was killed as a result of aircraft action.
After joining the R.A.A.F. in 1940, Flight-Sergeant Jeffreys trained at centres in this State, and then went to England, where he did operational flying. He later flew a Blenheim bomber to India, and was attached to the R.A.F. in North India. In due course Flight Sergeant Jeffreys did operational , flying over Burma and took part in flights about three times each week during the past six months. News now has been received of his death in action.
The late Flight-Sergeant Jeffreys was educated at Wesley College and in sport was best-known for his rowing activities. He did all his rowing for the Fremantle club, of which his father has been president for about 20 years, and amongst the last four successes in which he took part was a senior eight race in which he rowed for two of his brothers. He was chosen to represent the State in the inter-State eight oar race of 1940, but that big event was cancelled because of the war.
Flight-Sergeant Jeffreys was 24 years of age at the time of his death, and prior to joining up was employed by the Union Bank, Perth. He was a son of Mr. R. S. Jeffreys and the late Mrs. Jeffreys, Mr. Jeffreys being a well-known Fremantle business man and sportsman and a captain in the Fremantle battalion V.D.C. Flight-Sergeant Jeffreys had three brothers. Bob, who is a lieutenant in the.R.A.N.; Ralph, who is in the R.A.A.F., and Jack, who is in the A.I.F., and a step brother Bill, who is in the R.A.N.
