Son of Patrick O'Dea and Frances Elizabeth nee Henshaw of Maldon, Victoria.
During September 1917 Francis was attached to the Russians in Perisa until rejoining his unit on 17 January 1918. He then proceded to India from Basra for a months leave where he went AWOL for four months.
Commenced return to Australia from Bombay, India on 15 January 1919 aboard HT Themistocles disembarking on 5 February 1919 at Sydney for onward travel to Melbourne
