Son of Dr. Kurt Laufer and Ella F. Laufer; nephew of Mrs. E. Rosenthal, of New York City.

Ulrich Seigmund Laufer was born in Berlin, Germany and was studying Commercial Art when he fled Nazi persecution in 1940.  He was transported from England to Sydney onboard the S.S. Dunera.  Upon arrival he was sent to camp at Hay, NSW then in June 1941 to the Internment and POW Camp 2 in Tatura, Victoria.

In May 1943 Ulrich enlisted in the Army, serving as a labourer with the 8the Australian Employment Company at Tocumwal.  On 30 December 1943 while swimming with his friend in the Murray River they both tragically drowned. Private Laufer was 20 years old.
