NANNUP RESIDENT DIES - NORTHAM CAMP

MR. J. E. LAWLESS

The funeral of the late Pte. J. E. Lawless took place in the Northam Cemetery on Thursday, August 8, his remains being laid to rest in the Roman Catholic portion. It came as a shock to Nannup residents when news was received that Mr. Lawless had passed away in the military hospital at Northam. "Jim," who had been in training at Northam for about two months, contracted a cold during the previous week. He was admitted to hospital but pueumouia developed and swiftly claimed him as a victim.

He was a native of Paddiham in Lancashire, England, but since coming to Australia 14 years ago he had made his home with Mr. and Mrs. G. Dean, of Nannup. During that time he had won the admiration of all Nannup residents for the active part he had played in the advance of sport in the district. At the time of his enlistment he was secretary of the Nannup Bowling Club and much of the success of that club was due to his interest. In the early days of the Nannup Horticultural Society the late Mr. Lawless was instrumental in assisting to put that society on a sound financial footing.Even after he resigned the secretaryship he took an interest in the annual show of the society and as recent as last April officiated as judge in the chrysanthemum section.

A large number of Nannup and district residents journeyed to Northam to pay their last respects, among those present being Mrs. G. Dean, Messrs.J. Knowles, D. Dunnet representing the Nannup Road Board), Mel Dunnet (Nannup Bowling Club), Mr. James (president of the Northam Sub-branch of the R.S.L. represented the Nannup sub-branch) and Capts. Allen and Compton had charge of the funeral arrangements, while among those in the firing squad were Ptes. S. Bickford and M. Meldrum, both Nannup residents.

Deceased was one of four brothers serving in the forces, one of whom is in India, another in China and the other is a member of the Royal Air Force.
