A Malta based Martin Maryland light bomber of 69 Squadron RAF was shot down near the Tunisia / Algeria border while carrying out a strategic reconnaissance mission over Bizerta, Tunisia

The crew baled out of the stricken aircraft but Sergeant Lawrence 404018 RAAF was killed when his parachute failed to open.

Sergeant J.M. Alexander RAF 745637 and Sergeant F.W. Wilkins RAF 759058 were interned in Aumale, Algeria following parachute escape from the aircraft.
