Lawrence was the youngest of two children of Percival Harold Heberle (aka Harold; b1882 in Moonta Bay, South Australia) and Mabel Eunice Lawrence (b1890 in Picton Junction, WA). Harold ( a Porter with WAGR)and Mabel married in Melbourne, Victoria in 1914 and moved to Manly in Sydney, NSW. According to the Daily News (24 December 1924) 'The marrieage had been unhappy from the outset because of (Harold's) hot tempered and violent disposition'. Harry and Mabel returned to Perth WA in 1917 and were divorced in 1925 - Mabel reverted to her maiden name, and at a later date Leonard changed his name by deed poll to Lawrence.

Leonard was a Truck Driver in Perth WA in November 1942 when he enlsisted in the ACMF (Private; Service No:W80170). He Discharged to enlist in the RAN in March 1943 (Stoker II; Service No:F4966). 

In 1944 Leonard married Lillian in Perth WA, and on 30 October 1945 Leonard died from injuries sustained in an accident - his car crashed head on into a tram on 22 October. Lillian and their son Graeme lived in Scarborough, Perth WA and Lillian died in 1973.
