An efficiency report of 14 January 1946 stated: "Young, energetic, eager to learn practical points of engineering and not frightened to ask if uncertain. A good personality and despite youth well accepted by men. Sober and even tempered. Has all qualities to take him to the top."
An entry dated 26 March 1947 in Richard's service record stated: "Court of inquiry finds WX36746 Lieut R. H. Lee died on 9.2.47 from injuries received when motor cycle he was driving or on which he was a pillion passenger collided with a car driven by W. H. Silverstone of 14 Parliamentary Place, W. Perth in Railway Parade Karrakatta on 6. 2. 47. Impossible to state whether any neglect, carelessness or misconduct.
