James Duncan Drummond Morrison was born in Edinburgh on the 25.11.1891. He served a 5-year apprenticeship in Scotland, became a carpenter and was a Methodist. His next of kin was his mother Elizabeth (née Jones) who had legally separated from his father, James Charles Alexander Morrison, in the Court of Session, Edinburgh in October 1905. His father was not heard from again. Elizabeth was living at 72 Douro St, Fremantle, then 172 Beach St Fremantle, then in Stirling St, Perth. When James enlisted in the AIF at Blackboy Hill on the 16.6.1915, he had 4 years previous service with the Territorials. He was allocated the rank of Private and Service number 1762 with the 28th Infantry Battalion. He was 23 years 6 months old and described as being 5 feet 8½ inches tall, with a chest measurement of 33½ - 36 inches, fair complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. James embarked at Fremantle on 23.7.1915 on HMAT Demosthenes.  On the 7.11.15 he joined the MEF at Zeitoun, then proceeded to Mudros on the 18.11.15. He then embarked to join the BEF on the 16.3.16 and disembarked at Marseille. His battalion was involved in the Battle for Pozières from the 21.31.16. He was reported missing in action on the 29.7.16. A court of Enquiry for the 28th Battalion concluded that he was killed in action on that day at Villers Bretonneux, but his remains were not found. James is commemorated at the Villers Bretonneux Memorial. His personal effects were returned to his mother and included Kitstore book number 3, 2 brushes, housewife2, 3 notebooks, military book, religious book, facecloth, letters and cards. 2 a case for holding pins, needles and the like and pronounced HUZZIF.
