Stanley Calvert MACRAE was born in Toorak, Victoria on 16th January, 1912

His parents were Rev John Farquhar MACRAE and Jean Murray CALVERT who married in Victoria in 1903 - his father was born in Scotland and his mother was born in Birregurra, Victoria

Stanley was working for  the Orient Steamship Company in Melbourne & then moved to Western Australia where he worked as a passenger manager

He had obtained his civil flying licence before the war began & joined the RAAF in Perth, WA in February 1940 as an Air Cadet - he had not been allotted a service number

Stanley died near Werribee in Victoria from an accidental crash during a practice flight while being instructed on a Hawker Demon Biplane

His funeral was at the Toorak Presbyterian Church and he was cremated at the Springvale Cemetery - his name is memorialised on the Australian War Memorial & the Roll of Honour in Melbourne

AIR CADET KILLED

Werribee Crash

A cadet was killed and an instructor was slightly injured when an Air Force plane crashed near Kays Road, two miles south of Werribee yesterday afternoon.  

Following is the Air Boards statement

"The Air board regrets to announce that Air Cadet , Stanley Calvert Macrae, 28 of Toorak, serving with an intermediate training squadron at Point Cook, was fatally injured in a crash near Werribee this afternoon.

The other occupant of the aircraft was the Instructor, Flying Officer Garth Moreland who escaped with abrasions & shock

Macrae was receiving instruction in formation flying, when engine trouble developed, necessitating a forced landing, during which the aircraft was extensively damaged.

19th May, 1940  Cadet Stanley Calvert Macrae RAAF of No. 1 Flight Training School, Point Cook, Victoria was killed when aircraft stalled during gliding turn while making forced landing approach at Werribee. Mcrae was cremated and his ashes interred in Panel 3 of the Victoria Cremation Memorial

AIR CADETS FUNERAL

The private funeral of Air Cadet Stanley Calvert Macrae, 28 who was fatally injured in an aircraft crash near Werribee on Sunday afternoon, will leave Toorak Presbyterian Church for Springvale Crematorium.

He was educated at Sctoch College, Melbourne and was employed by the Orient Line in Melbourne until 3 years ago, when he became passenger manager for the company in Perth.

He was a keen oarsman and was secretary of Mercantile Rowing Club for some time

He was the 3rd son of Mrs J M Macrae of Tintern Avenue Toorak and the late Rev J F Macrae.
