Flying Officer Cecil John Trewelyan Mason 263679 RAAF of 20SQN and Leading Telegraphist Roy Woodroffe F329/10 RAN of HMAS Brisbane were executed by the Japanese after being captured in the Rabaul area (Namatanai / Feni Island) behind Japanese lines while working for Australian Naval Intelligence - 24 July 1942.

Flying Officer Mason is commemorated on the Rabual Memorial and LS Woodroffe RAN is buried in the Bita Paka War Cemetery, PNG (Woodroffe’s personal possession, a gold ring, was used to identify his remains and was forwarded to his family post-war)

Four USAAF Airmen were also executed - Pilot Massey (Maisey) of Chicago & Bombardier King, Arthur C from crashed aircraft 24 May 1942 at Wide Bay + Captain Peace O34206 (Pease, Harl Junior O-395206) of New England & Photographer Chikowsky (Sergeant Czechowske, Chester M 6915712) of Chicago parachuted from B17 E41-4239"
