Biography contributed by Chris Buckley
Private Neville Matthews (Service No:NX82974) served in the AIF with 12 Divisional Ordnance Workshops from 8 January 1942 to 28 December 1942. Private Matthews was on active duty at Adeliade River, Northern Territory when he was killed by a lightning strike. Private Matthews was the youngest of five brothers - Lindsay, Jack, Tom and D'arcy - who served in WWII.
The youngest of ten children, Neville was born in Peak Hill, NSW in 1917 to Sidney Richard Matthews (b1882 at Obley via Molong, NSW) and Emily Mary Clarissa Tyler (b1882 in Cobar, NSW). Sidney and Emily (both 17 years of age) married in 1900 in Peak Hill, where they settled and raised their family, and Sidney was an Auctioneer (partner in the firm Messrs Roache and Matthews). By 1930 they had settled in Sydney, where Sidney worked as a Clerk until his death in 1943.
Neville worked as a Farm Labourer, and in 1938 in Sydney, he married Florence (Letty) Letitia Abbott (b1918 in Sydney, NSW). Neville and Letty settled in Sydney, where Neville was working as a Drink Waiter when he enlisted in the AIF in January 1942. Following Neville's death in December 1942, Letty lived in Sydney, where she raised their daughter. Letty died in 1972.
