Before the war:
John Henry Flynn was born in the town of Port Pirie. He was the son of Thomas Robert Flynn and Letitia Flynn (nee Rogers). He moved from Port Pirie to Adelaide as a teenager and worked as a baker's journeyman before he decided to enlist in the Australian Imperial Force as a result of the Great War. Upon enlisting in the A.I.F aged 19 on the 19th of August 1915, John joined the 10th battalion and trained along with fellow soldiers on the Morphetville Racecourse. It wasn’t until the 12th of January 1916 that he was deployed. On the 12/1/16 John boarded the HMAT A30 “Borda” and left Adelaide to fight in the war.
The Borda first stopped at Esperance and then made its way toward Egypt. Once in Egypt he was transferred to the 10th Battalion on 28th February 1916. In April the unit sailed to France and in June they entered the front line. Sadly while there John sustained gunshot wounds to the thigh and hip (20th June 1916) and was admitted to Norik Evington Hospital. This required him to be evacuated to England, and he only returned to duty in November 1916. He remained in England training throughout 1917 (including another stay in hospital with illness) and returned to the 10th Battalion in France on 26th February 1918.
He was badly wounded in the face and left forearm on 4th July and again returned to England. He recovered and returned to France only after the Armistice was signed. He returned to Australia on the Euripides in September 1919.
After the events of the war John met his future wife Edith Mary Goddard. He married her in 1924 and they had a lovely life together. John had no trouble settling in to life after the war especially with the help of his wife. John then died in 1969 of natural causes and was buried in Centennial Park Cemetery in Adelaide.
